Effective Reading Speed (EWPM)

EWPM = Gross WPM × (Comprehension Score / 100)

Our platform's derived throughput score. It discounts raw reading speed by verified comprehension accuracy to encourage balanced, meaningful reading over superficial skimming.

Passage Readability & Lexical Complexity Calibration

All passages in our library are evaluated with automated readability metrics to ensure transparent difficulty categorization:

3. Statistical Distribution & Percentile Modeling

Why Our Model Uses μ = 238 WPM and σ = 65 WPM

In our percentile calculator and distribution curves, we map adult reading scores against an approximate Gaussian normal cumulative distribution function (CDF):

The Distinction Between Study-Level SD and Population Dispersion: In Brysbaert's (2019) meta-analysis, the unweighted mean of reported study standard deviations was 47.4 WPM. However, Brysbaert also documented that the typical adult non-fiction reading range spans 175 to 300 WPM—a total inter-individual spread of 125 WPM.

In a normal distribution, approximately 68% of a population falls within ±1 standard deviation of the mean. If the typical range (175–300 WPM) represents this central cluster, the corresponding dispersion parameter is 125 / 2 = 62.5 ≈ 65 WPM. We chose σ = 65 WPM as our platform's operational model parameter so that a score between 173 and 303 WPM falls naturally within the 16th to 84th percentiles.

Parametric Approximation Note: In empirical psychology, human reading rate distributions are typically right-skewed (log-normal), with a natural physiological floor near 80 WPM and an extended right-hand tail of high-fluency readers. Our symmetric Gaussian curve serves as a practical, actionable educational model rather than a clinical population census.
